Can we have an honest discussion? What I have found over the years is that most parents don’t really understand their rights as the parent of a child receiving special education services. It’s not your fault. Honestly, most teachers don’t know or understand your rights and are relieved when you decline to have them explained or reviewed. You get to the meeting and it goes a little something like this: Introductions are made. You’re handed about 15 pages of double-spaced text and told “here are your rights, do you need them explained?”. You look around and say “no”. Maybe that’s because you trust the school or maybe you’re intimidated by all the people who seem to know more than you. You leave the meeting with that paper and a stack of others, along with a huge sense of overwhelm. Was I close? If you live in Georgia, there is a condensed version of those parent rights available here: Condensed Special Education Parent Rights
I’ll be hosting a free Live Webinar on Special Education Parent Rights very soon. Stay tuned for details! You can also send me an email or complete the contact form requesting to be notified when the date and time is solidified.
